Discover the benefits of joining Chorley Building Society – trusted since 1859

Financial security came joint second when Britons were asked to list their ‘number one hope in life’ for a survey conducted by YouGov* - the desire sharing second spot with happiness and coming second only to good health.

One in seven Brits (15%) put finance at the top of their list, the most common wish (9%) was to have an ‘adequate financial situation’ – which translated into clearing debts, staying afloat financially, and a cheaper cost of living.

Another 3% spoke of wanting more money, while a further 3% were hoping for a cash windfall, such as a lottery win.

The chances of winning the lottery are well documented as being similar to being struck by lightning, one in 33 million, so aiming for financial security is best served with a more pragmatic approach - putting your faith (and money) behind a financial institution.

Why choose Chorley Building Society?

The answer is simple – we’re a building society that puts people before profits.

The big difference between Chorley Building Society and other high street banks and financial institutions is that we are a mutual Society. This means we do not have shareholders to serve, and we’re not listed on the London Stock Exchange. Instead, all our profits go back into the Society to benefit our Members.

Since forming to help 19th century mill workers buy their own homes, we have built a solid foundation on making a difference to the lives of our Members – borrowers and savers alike – and the local community.

Stephen Penlington, our Chief Executive, says: “We are extremely proud of our long and illustrious history as a mutual society, owned and run for the benefit of its Members. But what makes it even more special is that our purpose remains the same today as it did when we first formed to help local mill workers buy their own homes 166 years ago.

“Community has always been at the heart of everything we do, providing excellent services and products for savers and borrowers alike, supporting good causes throughout the borough and beyond, and playing our part in the local economy.”

More than just savings and mortgages

While putting people before profits is a good reason to choose Chorley Building Society, we believe our commitment to the community is another reason too.

Our ‘Chorley High Five’ initiative takes its name from a pledge by our Board of Directors to give a minimum of 5% of our operating profits annually to support local charities, community groups, not-for-profit organisations and grassroots clubs, and we have made awards totalling £183,700 over the past three years.

Locally, we are an ambassador for Inspire, Chorley Youth Zone, which is dedicated to young people from all over the Chorley area aged 8 to 19 years, and up to 25 for those with a disability, making an annual donation as well as supporting ad-hoc activities during the year as the zone aspires to help young people be the best they can.

We provide an  affinity account for Chorley-based Derian House Children’s Hospice and, regionally, we are a supporter of the charity-funded North West Air Ambulance.
